Zhuqing “Lester” S. Hu
My name is Lester Hu (胡渚清, 字漱嶼) and I am an Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of California, Berkeley. My research and teaching specialize in the history of Chinese music, the history of music theory, and music of the early modern world. This ongoing translation project arises from my teaching at Berkeley, where I frequently have to translate Classical Chinese texts into English for have classes. See my University of California, Berkeley page here.
The Reed Ashes Pavilion (葭樂閣) in the blog’s title refers to the name of our house. It is named after the practice of “observing the qi” houqi 候氣 in traditional Chinese music theory and calendar.
